Río Pisco

The río Pisco is a river of the Peru which crosses the areas of Huancavelica (Province of Castrovirreyna), and of Ica (Province of Pisco) before throwing in the Pacific Ocean close to the town of Pisco.

It occurs with the Lake Pultoc which is with 5  000 meters of altitude. Its length is approximately 472 km with its affluents.

The río Pisco has a catchment area of 4  500 km ² and traverse 170 km. It receives water of the Río Castrovirreyna. Its flow is controlled with the means of 4 reserves located in its catchment area.

This river of irregular mode reaches the coastal plain after being gone down from the the Andes in the form of a Torrent. Because of the irregularity of its flow, width of its bed and intensive recourse to the irrigation for the culture of the Vine, the Cotton and the orchards, it happens that in winter and at spring (from April at December), he does not arrive to the Pacific Ocean. This phenomenon is accentuated by the characteristics of the climate and the ground, the same ones which allowed the development of an agriculture of export which requires each day more water.

Río Pisco forms a marsh close to the village of Caucato in the province of Pisco. This wetland is used as refuge on the road of the migratory birds.
