Râja
Râja - female rani - is the title carried by the chiefs Hindou S who reign on a territory. When a râja is the suzerain of several others, it takes sometimes the title of mahârâja - of mahâ , large - or one of the forms râjadhirâja or râjarâja , king of the kings.
According to the areas of India, this word becomes (mahâ) râi , (mahâ) râna - female rânî - as with Udaipur, (mahâ) râwal as with Jaisalmer, in the north of the sub-continent, râo in the west, at the Marathe S for example, râya in the south.
The wire of râja are called Râjput S , of will putra “wire”. This name was extended to any military chief of a principality, a seigniory, a small or large canton, then with all the caste of the Kshatriya S, finally with the inhabitants of the the Rajasthan, formerly Râjputâna.
