The Quadruplex of Francis Marion Stokes is a historical building located in the North-western district of Portland, Oregon in the United States. “Quadruplex system” means, in this context, residential building including/understanding four apartments.

Structure

The Quadruplex system is built in the architectural style Mission Revival, which was popular on the west coast of the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century. The plan on the ground is of form rectangular; ground floors and stage each one are divided into two apartments. The building is coated with a rather smooth, typical rough coat of this Méditerranéen style, and its roof is flat. The principal frontage, directed southern, is symmetrical and includes/understands a porch of entry surmounted of an arch of style Moor decorated with two columns out of wooden.

The frontages is and western each one two small balconies have (one by stage) and a conduit of chimney passing by the two levels. The northern frontage is rather sober and includes/understands simply some windows and a door giving on the garden.

The site

The address of the Quadruplex system of Francis Marion Stokes is 2253 N.W. Pettygrove St One finds in same block of houses the " Pettygrove House" , remains historical built in 1892 and which was the principal residence of Francis Pettygrove, cofounder of Portland cement, which gained the right to name the city with a play of pile or face.

The Quadruplex system is located on a ground of 557 square meters and its four apartments do each one approximately 80 square meters.

The architect

Francis Marion Stokes designed the building in 1926 at the request of Mrs Esther Kuhn of Portland, Oregon. He became about it the owner in 1929 and occupied it until its death in 1975. The majority of the work of Stokes was created during the 46 years that it passed in this building, and had a considerable influence on the general Portland cement architecture.

National register of the historic sites

The building was added on the American National Register of the Historic sites in February 1996. It is also known under the name of " Kuhn Apartments" (Kuhn Apartments).
