Pseudophryne australis

Pseudophryne australis is a terrestrial frog species which one finds only in the area of Sydney in News-Wales-of-South in Australia. One finds it only in the sandstone rocks around the City since Ourimbah in north until Nowra in the south and in the Blue Montagnes.

Description

It is a small frog being 3 centimetres long which are characterized especially by its " T" red on the head. It is black or maroon dark on the back with red spots. It refers red at the end of the back. With dimensions ones are gray-blue with a white spot on the root of the legs. The belly is marbled of white and black with sometimes of blue between the two.

Habitat and Lifestyle

One only finds it around the temporary pond and rivers in the sandstone areas around Sydney.

The males, hidden in the sheets fallen on the ground or carpet under the rocks, call the females with great cries in the areas being able to be flooded after the strong rains. The eggs are hidden under the sheets in a nest which guard the male and the tétards start to develop in eggs before finishing their development in the temporary water points. In Sydney, one often finds it in the same habitat as Heleioporus australiacus.

This species is in the process of decline in consequence of the urbanization of the area.
