Provinces of the Netherlands

The Netherlands consist of 12 provinces (see the chart detailed opposite).

Twelve Provinces

Characteristics

The archipelago of the Wadden in north belongs to the province of the Plank, except Texel which belongs to the septentrional Holland and the uninhabited small islands of Rottumeroog, Rottumerplaat and Zuiderduintjes which belongs to Groningue.

Government

Each province is controlled by a Commissaire of the Queen named by the sovereign and a legislative body (provincial States) elected by the people. Compared to the provinces of the Canada or the States of the the United States, the provinces Dutchwomen do not have very wide capacities, although each one of them has its local parliament; they are administrative capacities which ensure the connection between the State and the communes. In fact, the main part of the powers legal, political and financial is exerted by the central government, and not by the provincial governments. The municipalities, for their part, are directed by a council elected by the people and a burgomaster (mayor) named by the sovereign. The town of Amsterdam remains the political and economic capital country, but the seat of the government is with $the Hague.

Territories of overseas

The kingdom also includes/understands the Dutch West Indies and the island of Aruba, both of the autonomous insular territories located in the the Caribbean. Politically speaking, the island of Aruba, the Dutch West Indies and the Netherlands form three distinct States within the Kingdom of the Netherlands ( Koninkrijk der Nederlanden ). The Dutch West Indies and the island of Aruba, autonomous insular territories located in the Caribbean, thus form part of the Kingdom, while remaining politically separate States. The Dutch West Indies can be officially indicated like the Dutchwoman Federation of overseas and, in this case, they include/understand the island of Aruba, but not the Netherlands.
