Province

The province is an administrative division used in several States, since the Roman Empire. The word province comes from the Latin provincia , which means overcome countries.

The Latin term provincia gave the Provence.

In France, the word province fell in disuse since the revolution. Since the word province was re-used in particular with the XXème century; with Paris, the expression in province means out of the Paris region . The expression thus gathers a whole of heterogeneous areas which it is complex to gather under the same term. One substitutes sometimes the expression to him in area , whereas l'" Island-of-France" is also a French area.

With the Netherlands, the provinces were regarded as almost independent States: to see Seventeen Provinces, republic of the United Provinces.
