Propithecus diadema
-
Within the species Propithecus diadema , one distinguishes four subspecies:
- Propithecus diadema diadema
- Propithecus diadema edwardsi
- Propithecus diadema candidus
- Propithecus diadema perrieri
-
the Propithecus diadema diadema is largest representing propithèques, or sifakas. Its big size enables him to compete with the Indri Indri for the title of larger alive lemur (it measures on average between 94 and 105 cm, and weighs between 6 and 8.5 kg).
- P.diadema is also one of the most coloured lemurs, with its face, its cheeks and its throat of white color, and its black crown which goes from the nape of the neck until the bottom of the back. Its muzzle and its head are black, the eyes red-chestnut. The upper limbs and lower go from orange to the gilded yellow, the hands and the feet are black. The belly is as for him generally white or gray.
- This propithèque has a geographical distribution higher than that of the other members of its kind. One indeed finds it in all the rainy forests of the east of Madagascar.
- Unfortunately, P.diadema is a species in danger, because of the reduction in its territory, due in particular to the extensive farming on denshering and the mining eploitations.
