Priory Saint-Gilles-of-Orchard of Angers

Foundation

The bishop Ulger (1125 - 1148) concedes in 1136 with the monks of Marmoutier an orchard actually belonging to évêché, load for the monks to build there a church, an old people's home and a cemetery (Departmental records of Maine-et-Loire, charter G 785 f° 8).

Loss of religious function

The priory disappeared as an institution, but the vault is always in function (it is current reformed Temple).

Nature of the occupants

Evolution of the term

  • the priory was dedicated to Gilles, but the vault was dedicated to Éloi. With time this last term ended up becoming the current term.
  • the addition of “orchard” points out the original statute of the ground where the priory is installed.

Evolution of the statute during the working life

The establishment was always a priory.
