Prior

Prieur comes from the Latin prior , the first.

It is in the beginning the name given by a Abbé to the Moine that it charges with part of the administration of a Abbaye. The prior can then be assisted or compensated by a Sous-prieur.

Female: prioress , sub-prioress .

It is also the name which the superior of a small community detached from that of an abbey carries. She then lives a Prieuré ( prioratus ), which holds its name of the prior. A priory can be either dependant, or independent of a mother abbey.

Administratively, a prior can also be the person in charge of a geographical spring of a hospital order, under the authority of a large-Master.
