Pretty May
Pretty May , a Documentary film French of Chris Marker left in 1963, with text of Chris Marker called by Yves Montand.
Synopsis
One month in a city, May 1962, Paris filmed closest to the paving stone and the faces by Chris Marker and its team. “In this first month of peace since seven years”, because the Guerre of Algeria is completed with the Accords of Evian, which make, of what the Parisian ones think? The war and the policy? One avoids speaking about it, the interviewer is even astonished some: would the French who liked so much to discuss be dumb?
Alternating panoramic with the sumptuous image on a very beautiful text of the realizer been used by the voice as Montand with interviews and investigations, mixing with the liking with a fluid narration the various kinds with documentary, the esthetism and engagement this film is rightly regarded as one of the tops of the work of Chris Marker and the new wave. Its attention for the daily newspaper, the life in what it has of more material, the diversity of the glances and the tenderness, not deprived of sometimes cruel irony, with which Chris Marker films the inhabitants draws up us a seizing table of Paris in change, in the fever of the rebuilding and the conquest of domestic happiness, Paris who is not either free from misery, still heavy of died of Charonne and of a silence which falls down on a war which will be concealed for a long time.
More than forty years after one can say that the bet of the realizer is won so much this film restores us with force one time and a place, a situation in what it has of more familiar and of more carrying future.
