Preface (song)

In the Gregorian chant, the foreword is a part of the ordinary one.

The foreword is sung by celebrating, which in fact a rather simple part. It however takes seat at the most solemn time of the celebration, and receives from this fact a treatment much more decorated than the other parts with celebrating.

It is reported that Mozart would have said I would give all my work for glory to have composed the foreword : it is certainly not in reference to the musical technicality of the part, but to the perfect adequacy between its liturgical function and its form, and undoubtedly also with the prestigious position which it holds in the liurgie.
