Préture
The préture was, at the time Roman, a magistrature creates in -365, when the Plébéien S could reach the consulate. They were called the Préteur S. This load was conferred at the origin only with Patriciens, but as of -337, of plebeian managed to reach préture.
It was initially single, with only one praetor. then there were of them two starting from -244, four in -228, then eight pennies Sylla, ten even fourteen pennies Jules César. With the empire, the number of the praetors was increased from twelve to eighteen.
The préture was an annual load; the second of great ordinary annual dignities, after that of Consul. It was necessary to be at least 35 years old and to be elected by the Comice S.
