History

The Factories of Creusot as of this time manufacture power hammers of various powers both for their workshops other companies. There is then a race with the power. In 1876 Creusot, well after the departure of François Bumblebee and his death in 1865, built a power hammer of 80 T, carried shortly after to 100 T.

The first blow of rammer is given the September 23rd 1877 and when it was in action, one heard the shock on the part to 10 km with the round. It was most powerful of the world and the only one of its species during years. The power hammer symbolized a long time the supremacy of industry creusotine and was imitated by the large forging mills like Saint-Chamond, Terni, Bethlehem (the USA). It was dismounted in 1930 and is classified International Industrial Monument by " The American Society off Mechanical Engineers ".

The power hammer is the emblem of the City of the Creusot. It was gone up at the southern entry of the city, places of May 8th, 1945.

Operation

Principle

The force of the vapor, acting on the Piston, raises the hammer by the stem. By letting the vapor escape, the piston+marteau unit falls down and strikes the part with a great force. The movement of the power hammer of 100 tons is very precise: an experienced blacksmith could close a bottle with a cork stopper without breaking it or breaking the hull of a nut by leaving the intact fruit.
