Pourmille

The phrase pourmille or by thousand is used to indicate a tenth of a Pourcentage. He is written with the sign ‰, which resembles the sign percentage (%) with one zero additional at the end. It is a stylized form of three zeros with the Dénominateur.

When it is used to describe the Real estate tax with the the United States, it is called the millage spleen .
For example, 5 ‰ = 5/1000 = 0,005 = 0,5%

In Demography, the symbol ‰ is often used to express certain rates, like a Death rate or a Birth rate.
For example, a birth rate of 15 ‰ means that there were during a year given 15 births for a population of 1000 inhabitants.
