Poul Anderson
Poul William Anderson (born with Bristol (Pennsylvania) the November 25th 1926 and dead the July 31st 2001 with Orlinda (California) is a writer of Science-fiction and Fantasy states-unien.
Biography
Poul Anderson was born in Pennsylvania parents of Danish origin . Its youth occurs in the American middle-West, which explains, all along its career, of many references to the country and rural world. It follows studies of Physique to the Université of Minnesota and, to pay its studies, publishes its first text Tomorrow' S children ( children of tomorrow ) in March 1947 in the magazine Astounding . It obtains its diploma later one year. In the following years, it settles with San Francisco where it continues to only write news either, or in collaboration (particularly with Howard Waldrop, Gordon R. Dickson or Karen Kruse which it will marry and with which it will have a girl, Astrid, married with the writer Greg Bear). It is only in 1952 that its first novel appears, Vault off the old , which is a book for children. Its first science-fiction novel, Brain wave ( mental Barrier ), will be published only two years later.During its career, he writes more than one hundred of novels and anthologies (including detective novels and histories or even collections of poems). In the field of the science fiction, it often uses its knowledge in Physique and Chimie to develop scientific topics. It is also often inspired by elements of the Scandinavian Mythologie. He writes several series, of which most known in French is that of the Gardiens of time mainly in a style of “Space Opera”.
He gained 7 Prix Hugo and 3 Prix Nebula (always for news) among many prices of which the Grand Master Award of the SFWA of which he is president of 1972 with 1973.
Poul Anderson remains an author very little translated into French (only 23 novels out of approximately 130). This is explained partly by its political standpoint (he had decided in favor of American engagement during the Guerre of Vietnam for example) which excluded it from the world of the French-speaking edition during the years 1970.
