Pouilles
The Area of Pouilles ( Italian Puglia in , in the past Apulie), known as more usually Pouilles even Pouille , is a Région of Italy, located at the south-east of the country. The adjective corresponding is thus apulien (and not cankered or pouillais ).
Geography
Pouilles constitute to some extent the “heel” of the Italian “boot”.
This area is surrounded by the Basilicate, the Molise, the Campanie, as by the Adriatic Sea with the east and the Ionian Mer in the south. It covers a surface of 19.372 km ² and counted 4,02 million inhabitants in 2001, that is to say a density of 208 habitants/km ².
The Eastern area of Italy, the course of Otranto ( Otranto ) is distant only of 80 kilometers of the coasts of the Albania.
Administrative divisions
The Area of Pouilles is divided into 5 provinces:
- Province of Bari, chief town Bari
- Province of Brindisi, chief town Brindisi ( Brindisi )
- Province of Foggia, chief town Foggia
- Province of Lecce, chief town Lecce
- Province of Tarente, chief town Tarente ( Taranto )
A sixth province of Barletta-Andria-Trani or Province of Ofanto, was created by the Law of the n° 148 of June 11th, 2004, having like chief town, jointly, the 3 éponymes communes.
Culture
In Antiquity, the southern part of Apulie was called Calabria (in Latin Calabria ). The current Calabria was called Bruttium . The Calabria had as a principal city Brundisium (Brindes).
The Tarentelle is a supposed very fast dance to have a therapeutic virtue.
The Salento, which includes/understands all the province of Lecce a good part of the province of Brindes and the south of the province of Tarente, speaks a dialect of the type Sicilien, the Salentin. In the province of Lecce there exists a linguistic island hellénophone: the Grecìa salentina including/understanding nine communes where is spoken a modern Greek language, the Griko.
Tarente speaks the dialect Tarentin; it is a communal dialect, because it with the characteristic to be spoken almost exclusively inside the communal enclosure.
The colonies of That di San Vito and of Faeto, in the Province of Foggia are of language arpitane. a linguistic minority Francoprovençal E of approximately thousand inhabitants.
Several villages are populated of Arbëresh, descendants of the mercenaries Albanian installed in the area since the 15th century.
Economy
Agriculture is incontestably the strong point of the regional economy (corn, olive groves, vineyards, fruits). Tourism and industry (petrochemistry with Brindes and iron and steel industry with Tarente) also play a big role.
