Port of Mount-of-Marsan

Today disappeared, the river port of Mount-with-Marsan was formerly in the middle of the trade and the animation of the city.

History

The port is established little time after the foundation of the city by Pierre de Lobaner, in XIIe century, not far from the Castelnau. He experienced a fast development thanks to the strategic position of the city in extreme cases of the High Moor, the Chalosse and the Armagnac.

He was located on left bank of the Midouze, slightly in Aval of the Confluence of the Twelve and the Midou. Hold S, Quay S, warehouses and tow path still testify to this last rich person. The soft inclined holds facilitated the comings and goings of the warehouses to the quays to charge and discharge the Gabarre large S. These Barque S, locally called Galupes, conveyed with Bayonne during all the Moyen-âge and the Ancien Mode the products of the Landes of Gascogne and the Armagnac (wines landais, Armagnac, corn, honey, tar and resin, Spirits of turpentine, pit props) and made live the economy of the back-country.

Arrived at the Wearing of Bayonne, the galupes borrowed the Nive to accost on left bank of the affluent of the Adour, between the bridges Mayou and Panecau.

From Bayonne were brought back fish (cods and sardines), foreign fabrics, cloths, oil, stones of size but especially of salt, essential to the conservation of the food products, especially the meat.

The river traffic ensured the prosperity of the Batelier S, organized in Confrérie. The port, in quasi constant competition with the other commercial cities, in particular Dax, declined and ceased any activity with orée of the years 1900, marked by the arrival of the Railroad, more rapid, more economic and requiring of long less important labor.
