Pollution of the valley of the Meuse

Very strong atmospheric pollution having taken place in December 1930, in the valley of the Meuse, near Seraing (near to Liege in Belgium).

This pollution, of industrial origin (important local iron and steel plants), had due to very bad conditions of atmospheric dispersion (intense fogs, Couche of inversion of low and thick temperature), associated with strong emissions of SO2, Suspended particles and various Aérosol S. It is thus an extreme phenomenon of Pollution " acido-particulaire"

The consequences were dramatic: 60 deaths were raised (either, for the period of pollution, an increased mortality of 10,5%, compared to one normal period).

Several thousands of people also presented serious respiratory problems.

This phénoméme historical of pollution of the valley of the Meuse takes into account the Pollutions of London, observed in the Fifties, among the most serious phenomena of Pollution " acido-particulaire" observed.
