Pollution of London

The agglomeration of London was notably assigned by the Atmospheric pollution to various recoveries.

Pollution primarily of industrial origin, the Polluant S concerned (Sulfur dioxide, Suspended particles) reached very high concentrations, with the favor of climatic conditions favourable with their accumulation (intense fogs, Couche of intense inversion atmospheric and basic altitude, etc).

Four major crises are:

  • That of the “Basin of London” in 1952 (from December 5th to 9th); it involved the death of approximately four thousand people, primarily of the children and the elderly, as well as a very increased Morbidité (cough, vomiting, affections of the nose and throat).
  • the pollution of “Large London” of 1956, with more than thousand deaths; that of 1957 (from 700 to 1.000 deaths); and that of 1962 with 340 deaths.

These historical atmospheric pollutions are among highest having reached the western world: the specialists name them “acido-particulate Pollution”.
