The Tour of Spain ( Vuelta Ciclista has EspaƱa ) is a competition cyclist with stages whose first edition took place in 1935, and annually disputed since 1955.

It is a three weeks competition, disputed at the end of the summer. Its way varies year by year and consists of a score of stages adding up approximately 3000 kilometers. The last stage finishes traditionally with Madrid, the capital. The Turn of Spain east, with the Turn of Italy (Giro) and the Tour de France, one of the three large turns cyclists.

History

Inspired by success of the Tour de France and Giro, and by the increase in the sales of the newspapers at their origin ( the Car and Gazzetta dello Sport ), Juan Pujol, director of the newspaper Informaciones organize the Tour first of Spain in 1935. The first edition is held from April 29th to May 15th, 1935. It includes/understands 14 stages, accommodates 50 participants and is gained by the Belgian Gustave Deloor. This last gains the 2nd edition of the Turn, which adopts a format different while passing from 14 to 21 stages.

Between 1937 and 1944, Vuelta is disputed only twice, in 1941 and 1942, because of the Guerre of Spain and the Second world war. These two editions, whose participants all are almost Spanish, are gained by Julian Berrendero.

Today disputed in September, Vuelta was held until 1995 in spring (April-May). This change of calendar increased the prestige of the race.

Distinctive shirts

Contrary to the turns of France and Italy, the Turn of Spain does not have traditional distinctive shirts. The color of the shirts of leaders changed with the passing of years, often with the liking of the sponsors.

Only the shirt distinguishing the leader from general classification has been stable for several decades. This shirt is yellow-but ( amarillo ).

The shirt of the points score is currently red (it was orange, then blue before), and the shirt of the classification of the mountain is gray (white in the past with pea oranges, then red).

In addition to its 3 classifications, Vuelta distinguishes from it a fourth which regularly changed. It is currently about the combined classification, which takes into account the places of the runners in the 3 above mentioned classifications. The leader of this classification carries a white shirt (gray in the past, then orange and green). This classification replaced the classification of the flying metas (arrived intermediate).
