Police chief of the LNH

The police chief of the National league of hockey is official the most important of the league. Of 1917 then with 1993, the station was called the President . The title changed in order to standardize name with the other leagues of sport of North America.

The Police chief of the current LNH is Gary Bettman.

History

The first president of the league is Frank Calder and it will remain in station until in 1943. Calder knew to make it possible the LNH to survive the various tests of time including inter alia the first and Second world war as well as the Grande Depression of 1929. The January 25th 1943 whereas it chairs a meeting with the governors of the LNH, it knows a first heart attack, then one second at the hospital. A new heart attack carries it the February 4th. Calder had set up within the LNH the Trophée Calder for best the recruit of the season, trophy which it even paid him. With its death, the trophy ( Calder trophy ) changes name slightly and becomes the Calder trophy memorial .

To replace it, Red Dutton, old defender of the LNH of 1921 with 1936, is set up to succeed Calder. Dutton takes the position of president of the LNH that with against heart and that under the pressure of the governors of the league. He resigns of the station in 1946, after being himself found a substitute in the person of old a referee, Clarence Campbell.

Campbell thus accepts the position of president of the LNH, posts that it will occupy about thirty year until in 1977. Thus, it increases the number of matches played during the regular season from 50 to 70, it founds the matches of the Stars in an annual way. He is at the base of the negotiations with the AMH to include four of the franknesses in the LNH in 1979: the Oilers d' Edmonton, the Jets of Winnipeg, Scandinavian of Quebec and the Whalers de Hartford. It is one of the first presidents really to have listened and worked with the Association of the players of the LNH and in particular made it possible to choke in egg the threats of strike action weighing on the final of the Coupe Stanley of 1992.
