Pohutukawa

The pohutukawa ( Metrosideros excelsa ) is a shrub or a tree of the family of the Myrtaceae .

It is known like the Christmas tree of New Zealand , not so much for its foliage or its form but because it produces red masses of flowers in brilliant points towards Christmas (naturally at the beginning of the summer in New Zealand).

  • Origin: New Zealand where it is called Pohutukawa.
  • Foliage: persisting, sheets opposed, simple, lancéolées with a felting white-gray below and a little above.
  • Flowering: summer, flowers joined together in cymes final, with apparent coloured cheesecloths
