Poggibonsi

Poggibonsi is a city of the Province of His, in Val of Elsa, Toscane, one of the Régions of Italy.

Geography

Poggibonsi is to approximately 40 km of Florence and 20 km of His.

History

From a geological point of view, the territory of Poggibonsi was formed during the recent tertiary sector, and especially during the Pliocène. The oldest archaeological parts relative to a human installation date from Prehistory (Neolithic), but most important go back to the times Etruscan and Roman, as many small the necropoles scattered not far from the current dwellings testify some, on the hills of the district in direction of north, the North-East, from which comes inter alia the richest collection from ancient ceramics from all the Valley from Elsa. The origin of the toponyms preserves the traces of the presence of the man during antiquity: if Talciona returns us in the Etruscan world, like also Marturi ( Maris , Etruscan name of Mars, or March-Turan, i.e. the March-Venus dyad in Etruscan), the names of Luco ( locus , i.e. sanctuary), Megognano, Gavignano, Cedda, Cinciano, Sornano and Gaggiano is of Latin origin. This Latin origin also relates to the highway network.

At the end of Antiquity (time of the reign of the Ostrogoths), are built ground houses, which one identified the site in the foundations of the ramparts built under the Médicis, on the " poggio di bonizzo". Then huts at the time of the Lombards are built and the Francs.

However, the Increase in population principal, which involved an expansion of the cores of dwelling, intervened between 10th and the 12th century, when Poggibonsi, because of the new layout of the Via Francigena , came to be found directly placed on this very important road artery.

It is at the 10th century which the development of Borgo di Marte begins, called Marturi then, then Borgo Vecchio, today Poggibonsi.

The theories of the historians concerning the origins of the antique Borgo Marturi are varied. That which is allowed is that of the Etruscan origins, in spite of the legend which wants that the city has built by Roman soldiers survivors of the defeat of Catilina, occurred with Pistoia into 62 before J. - C.
