Platform

A platform (plural platforms ) is in the broad sense an elevated and plane place, on which one can position, to direct, to store various things.

Trade, social

With the illustrated direction, it is about a privileged place where certain services are concentrated.
  • a platform of phone call is a center where operators receive and treat calls.

Oil industry

A oil Plate-forme is industrial premises allowing the extraction of the Pétrole on the open sea, one says Offshore

Political

The whole of the Idea S on which a Political program rests. It is about a place of reception of the political ideas where the possibility of their application is discussed.

Data-processing

A platform is in Informatique a base of work from which one can write, to read, use, develop a whole of software.

It can be made up:

Examples:

  • When one speaks about platform Linux or Windows, it can act of the Operating system only or of the formed whole of the operating system and of the subjacent Computer material
  • When one speaks about platform Web, it can act of the server software Web, this same software with its subjacent server software, operating system Web with its operating system and its material, a whole of machines with Web server, or the same whole by taking account of the infrastructures network and connectivity with Internet.
  • When one speaks about software platform, it often acts, like specifies it the definition, of a base of work applied to a particular context, for example the analysis of images, intensive calculation, the génomique one, the protéomique one.
The data-processing platforms are generally designed, developed, built, brought into service and are maintained by Computer makers. In the case of the software platforms, they are rather maintained by the organizations (for example the INRIA, CNRS, the ECA, the INRA) which lodge the base of work and the software associated.

Let us note that the Québécois Office of the French language writes it in only one word: " plateforme" n.f. However, the word " punt-forme" is accepted like a graphic alternative. Moreover, the " terms; plateforme" and " environnement" are often used to define the same thing.

Auto industry

  • In the Automobile Industry , a platform is a Structure basic of a vehicle, made up of a Châssis and certain nonvisible parts.
  • This structure basic can be used to build vehicles of different models, even of different marks. It brings to the manufacturers a saving in cost of Conception and Fabrication, which involved their generalization, the manufacturers gathering to design it and produce it.
  • the vehicles built on the same platform in common have the way (width between the two wheels of the same axle) and the footing (distance between the two wheels of two axles). On the other hand the Overhang before and back, and the Carrosserie can be modified. The limit of this concept is construction even Frame-hull.
  • the design and the production of the engines are subject to the same industrial rules and are often produced jointly. They are used with the motorization of multiple models as cars with Annexe S and different Réglage S.

Space industry

In the space Industry, a platform or a Module of service ( service modulates English ) is the part of a satellite which ensures of the functions without direct relationship with its mission first. Some examples of abundant services by a platform:
  • To provide the interface with the launcher
  • To support all the equipment, thanks to possible Structure lightest
  • To ensure thermal control equipment of the satellite
  • To allow the deployments of various appendices, thanks to Mechanism S
  • To control the attitude and the Orbit (or the trajectory of a probe)
  • To generate and store the energy
  • To ensure the Connection S with the ground for the follow-up (telemetry), the Control (remote control) and the localization by the persons in charge of the project
  • To manage functions of the edge thanks to a Computer and its Software specific.

Inertial platform

A inertial platform (or platform with inertia or inertial unit) is a device which preserves the same position in a universal reference mark (founded on stars for example) and that independently of the movements of the mobile which transports it. It is thus used as guidance system.

Video game

The plays of platform consist of a series of levels that the hero must traverse while jumping from platform in platform, while avoiding the traps and the enemies drawn up on the course. One of the first series of sets of platforms is Super Mario and one of most known.
