The Guianese shield or Plateau of Guyanes constitutes an area of South America, located on the north-eastern coast. It is about a geological formation formed with the Précambrien, of age ranging between 2,5 and 1,9 billion years. It represents one of the oldest always visible solid masses on planet, composed of impressive plates of altitude called Tepuy S . It is of these plates that throw themselves among the most impressive cascades of planet, like Angel Falls, Kaieteur Falls, Kuquenan Falls and the Salto Angel.
The plate of Guyanes extends on 5 countries. Of west in east:
- the Venezuela, where the plates are delimited in north by the Orénoque. In this part of the solid mass are located the national parks of Canaima and Kaieteur
- the Guyana, old British Guyana or English
- the Suriname, old Guyana Dutch Dutchwoman or
- the French Guiana
- the north of the Brésil delimited by the the Amazon
The Mont Roraima in Guyana was regarded a long time as the culminating point of the plate, with: 2810 meters of altitude.
The Guianese shield is made of granites and metamorphic rocks.
The area is covered by the largest wet tropical virgin forest, not yet victim of deforestation. The Guianese forest is from its nature similar to that of Amazonia of which it is a prolongation, and comprises in addition to the parks already quoted like protected areas, the Iwokrama forest in the center of the Guyana and the National park of Kanuku in the south of the country.
