Pierre of Hungary

Pierre of Hungary , born Pietro Orseolo and called “the German” by his opponents, succeeded his uncle Etienne {{Ier}} as king of Hungary of 1038 with 1041 and of 1044 with 1046.

Wire of a sister of Etienne and the doge de Venise Ottone Orseolo (marriage in 1009). It must leave this city when his/her father is driven out by it by Conrad {{Rom|II}} Salic the in 1026 to have supported his/her brother against a German patriarch by conducting campaign in Croatia. Orseoli will never recover a capacity acquired for the first time by their family one half-century earlier. Ottone flees in Byzance.

His/her son, it, take refuge in his uncle Etienne, in Hungary. With died in 1031 of Emeric, the last wire of Etienne, like Pierre, was born Christian while going down from Arpad, it is designated officially as heir to the Hungarian throne by the king. He is thus preferred with another royal nephew, Pierre Deljan, future tsar of the Bulgares, but also with Samuel Aba, brother-in-law of Etienne, or Vazul, a first cousin: both grew in the Paganisme. Vazul will rebel in vain against this decision.

Pierre succeeds Etienne in 1038 with the agreement of the pope Benoit {{Rom|IX}} . It is a tyrant: he completely neglects to consult the royal council, he replaces many Hungarian dignitaries by Italians and Germans, he strips the widow of Etienne, Gisele of Bavaria, he raises enormous taxes (and creates for that the function of centenier , tax person in charge local) and finally he follows a catastrophic foreign politics. In short, it is haï.

Détrôné first once by Samuel Aba in 1041, it takes refuge in Germany. It is the beginning of a twenty year old civil war.

It is restored by the troops of Henri {{Rom|III}} on the throne after the defeat and the death of Samuel Aba in 1044 but persists in its excesses. He declares himself even by twice vassal of the emperor. In 1045, the Gisele queen prefers to flee and regain its native Bavaria. It cruelly makes repress two conspiracies but, finally, although it also made some positive decisions, the assessment is disastrous and Pierre is again driven out capacity in 1046 by wire of Vazul. One of them, Andre {{Ier}}, will succeed to him.

It is most probably at the time of its agitated reign that the first Hungarian crown disappeared which Etienne at the time of his advent had received, that is to say when Henri III to Rome in 1044 returned, that is to say during the final escape of Pierre. Although known as “of Saint-Etienne”, the royal crown of Hungary which one can always admire today, is posterior.
