Pierre Emmanuel

No5el Mathieu , more known under the pseudonym Pierre Emmanuel , born the May 3rd 1916 with Gan (Yrénées-Atlantiques), dead the September 24th 1984 with Paris, is a Poète French of Christian inspiration .

Biography

While his/her parents emigrated in the United States, it was raised by a paternal uncle. After studies of letters at the university of Lyon, it started a career of teacher. Come with poetry by the reading from the Young person Parks Valéry, it familiarized herself with romantic German (Hölderlin) and the English authors (Hopkins, Hardy). It is Pierre Jean Jouve, which it met in 1937, which was to guide it in its poetic beginnings: Elegies (1940), Tomb of Ophée (1941).

Taken refuge in the Drome during the Occupation, it continued its activities of teacher and took part in Resistance, and wrote: Days of Anger , Combat with the Defenders , Freedom guides our steps .

In margin of his activities of poet, Pierre Emmanuel also exerted the journalistic profession while collaborating, like Christian of left, with Christian Témoignage, Réforme, Esprit.

Chief of the English services then American of rtf of 1945 to 1959, it gave several conferences to the United States and Canada, and was visiting professor of various American universities. Engaged in more than one way in the cultural life of its time, he was still president of the International association for the Freedom of the Culture, chair PEN French Club of 1973 to 1976, president of the Commission of the Cultural Affairs for the Life Plan, president of INA and administrator of the Festival of Fall .

He proposed in particular the creation of a Conseil of cultural development in which will take part François-Governed Country house, Jack Lang, François Billetdoux, Claude Santelli, Alfred Grosser or Iannis Xenakis. Although not very active this council probably inspired the policy of cultural intervention which the future Jack Lang minister will practice.

French Academy

Pierre Emmanuel was elected with the French Academy, the April 25th 1968, with the armchair 4, succeeding the marshal June. Its official reception took place on June 5th 1969. Taking pretext of the election of Félicien Marceau, whose he denounced the attitude according to him Collaboration nist, he declared outgoing Academy in 1975 and ceased sitting. However, its fellow-members did not take note of this decision and awaited its disappearance to carry out its replacement, occurred on April 18th 1985 with the election of the professor Hamburger.
