Pierre Adt

Peter Adt known as the Marshal ahead , naturalized French in 1865 Pierre Adt , born the September 8th 1820 with Ensheim and died the April 10th 1900 with Pont-à-Mousson, was mayor of Forbach of 1865 with 1871.

Biography

In territory of the Saar, is a village of the name of Ensheim. At the 18th century, the Miller of the places which is called Mathias Adt, with the idea to manufacture Tabatière S by engraving pieces of Bois. It is the beginning of the great epopee of the snuffboxes and the most various articles made for all kinds of uses.

Thanks to the monks of Wadgassen (the Saar) which sells boxes with the liking of their peregrinations, Mathias takes note of the invention made by a Parisian printer which had the idea to stick sheets of paper the ones on the others: the Papier chewed was born. The eight wire of the miller, and then his descendants, will develop the production by improving it thanks to all the technological innovations which will mark the 19th century in addition. The presses with vapor, for example will constitute a contribution determining as regards variety of the forms and quality of the most various papier-m4ach3e articles manufactured. But the obstacles are they also many and varied. Including in the customs field where the taxes to be paid are high. This is why Peter Adt III, the great-grandson of Mathias, structure his activity by creating in 1839 the Company of the Brothers Adt (Firma Gebrüder Adt, in German) for its three Franz sons, Peter and Jean-Baptiste. The new business thinks of being established with Forbach, the France having become in the interval a very carrying market in particular for the boxes at Tabac to snuff (of this time one “sniffait” the tobacco). A first attempt in 1844 turns short and at the end of three years, Adt will be established with Sarreguemines. Probably attracted by the fact that Forbach is served by the Railroad as of November 1851 and even connected to Saarbrucken a year later, Adt come to be definitively established with Forbach in May 1853. And this time under the direction of Peter who replaces his Franz younger brother to which had been entrusted management in 1844.

Peter is 33 years old. Very francophile, it made its studies in France and it went often to Paris… In 1850, it married there young a 28 year old widow: Emilie Milon, in the Saint Nicolas's Day church of the Fields. It had had two children of its first marriage, they will have three others of them together. Emilie was born in Paris in 1821. Very patriotic, it nevertheless kept all its life lasting of excellent relationship with the German branch of the family…

With Forbach, it would seem that the first Adt workshops were located beside the Karsch hotel, therefore with the site of current the Leader Price. Peter Adt, new directing, settles with his family in a beautiful property having a vast park, the current hospital Holy-Bores. There are already a son, Henri, born in 1851 in Paris. A girl, fore-mentioned Berthe, is born in 1853, and a second wire, Emile, in 1855. Berthe dies at 12 years. For the employees of the factory, Peter Adt quickly becomes the “Marshal ahead” because of the dynamism of which it makes proof, of his will to go from before developing the company. And in fact, the production diversifies and manpower increase quickly. In 1865, a factory with gas is installed. It non-seulement makes it possible to introduce the night-work to the factory, but also to make profit the town of a public lighting. This city whose Pierre Adt, now French, becomes the mayor.

One month hardly after his nomination, Pierre Adt submits to the Municipal council a report/ratio of the Commission of the Schools of the City to which belonged, in addition to itself, several personalities particularly favorable to the creation of a Collège boys. The municipal council adopts the conclusions of the commission. Pierre Adt at once will see the Préfet the Moselle, then, extremely of the support of the Minister for the State education, which warmly congratulates it for its engagement… He makes open the college of Forbach which functions… without no legal formality being still filled! The decree authorizing creation with Forbach of a general college is not signed by Napoleon, Empereur of the French, that the January 17th 1867.

Under the impulse of Pierre Adt, another project will be concretized: it is about the construction of a catholic church, that of Kappelberg being definitely too decayed. The October 21st 1868 will be devoted the news church Saint-Remi which draws up today still its proud silhouette.

It is also in 1866 that on the initiative of Pierre Adt will be created the choral society of men, who, three years later, will become the Concordia choral society, oldest of associations forbachoises.

And then it is the episode of the Guerre of 1870 and the lost battle of the August 6th to Spicheren, Stiring and also in Forbach (see Bataille of Forbach-Spicheren). As of the July 31st, the general Frossard establishes its district-general in the Adt mayor, who places at the disposal the first stage of his vast residence. The dramatic exit of the conflict between the France and the Germany will upset the life of Pierre Adt. He resigns of his post of mayor the June 14th 1871 and will found a new factory in French territory, with Pont-à-Mousson. For Mussipontains, the factory of snuffboxes, installed with the site of old the University, it will be “Touched it”. it develops quickly.

Fact knight of the Legion of honor by decree of the October 29th 1889, Pierre Adt is still the president-founder of the public limit company of the Mechanical Tilery of Jeandelaincourt which sees the day the September 16th 1893. Pierre Adt dies the April 10th 1900 in Pont-à-Mousson.

Memory

In homage to this man who created the first college of Forbach (current École of the center of the Passaga avenue). The college established street of Remsing bears the name of Pierre Adt .
