Pierre-Frederic Sarrus

Pierre Frederic Sarrus , born on March 10th 1798 with Saint-Affrique, deceased on November 20th 1861, is a Mathématicien French.

In 1815, Sarrus hesitated for the continuation of its career between medicine and mathematics. The refusal of the mayor of Saint-Affrique to grant a to him Character reference, because of its opinions Bonapartist S and of his origins Protesting be, will oblige it to choose the faculty of Sciences.

With Montpellier it became acquainted with Gergonne and published several articles and memories in the Annales of Gergonne , one of the first reviews the méthématiques ones, in the years 1820.

In 1829 it is named mathematics professor with the Faculty of Science of Strasbourg, of which he will be senior of 1839 to 1852. It publishes the majority of its work of the time in the Journal of mathematics pure and applied of Liouville. He knows health issues and takes his retirement in 1858.

Its work concerns on the methods of resolution of the numerical equation S, and the Calcul of the variations. In 1853, it solves one of the most difficult problems of the mechanics of the articulated parts, that of the transformation of the alternative rectilinear motions into continuous circular motions.

But it is especially famous near the students in mathematics for a rule of calculation of the determinant S of size 3, which bears its name. This one was clarified for the first time in the article Nouvelles methods for the resolution of the equations published in Strasbourg in 1833.
