Philip K. Dick

Philip Kindred Dick , better known under the name of feather Philip K. Dick , born on December 16th, 1928 with Chicago, deceased on March 2nd, 1982 with Santa Anna, 56  km in the south of Los Angeles in California, was an American author of Romance and Nouvelle S of Science-fiction.

Biography

Youth

The death of his/her sister twins, Jane Charlotte, the January 26th 1929 (then hardly 6 weeks old), deeply affects it until the end of its life. This rather incomprehensible death is allotted to an allergy to the mother's milk. All its life Philip Dick feels that part of itself is missing, which is most probably at the origin of the exceptionally strong duality of its work. (One sees of it an echo in his novel " Dr. Bloodmoney" , in the person of the little brother " intern" , still-born child, in telepathic relation with its adult twin). Enough young person, it suffers from Vertige S and later one diagnoses a Schizophrénie to him which will be refuted thereafter. Terrorized by what he imagines, he discovers the Science-fiction in the magazine of news Stirring Science Stories and detects the only possible exit there to exteriorize his anguishes.

At four years, his parents Divorce NT and there remains alone with his mother, with Berkeley. Although the marital psychologist predicted that separation would not assign the child, this one will however complain all its life about it. His/her father definitively breaks any relation with the family.

After having started with the the University of California of the philosophical studies which it will never finish (the Maccarthysme being then with its apogee, it is returned for communist sympathies ), he is devoted to his principal passion: music, at the point to make its trade of it. He works indeed as programmer for a radio station, and in same time, as salesman of discs in a store with Berkeley, Universal Music . There one recognizes many autobiographical elements used in " Radio free Albemuth" , its attractive posthumous and paranoid novel, which recreates with a remarkable evocative capacity the very particular time where prepared, in Berkeley, the wave Hippie and later movements of the Années 1960.

The majority of the biographers suppose that in fact the pulp S American ( Galaxy , Fantasy and Science-fiction , Astounding Stories , etc) made him discover the science fiction. Whereas it is still with the college, it starts to write its first texts of SF (and of poetry), of which some are published in the Berkeley Gazette , the very first one being The Devil , dated from the January 23rd 1942.

In May 1948, Jeanette Marlin becomes his first wife. He will divorce it 6 months later (their centers of interest diverged completely) for remarier in June 1950 Kleo Apostolides, of Greek, militant origin minor gauchist, driven with FBI because shown Communism. Dick must then face the visit of two federal agents, which require of him to inquire into his wife. He refuses, but however ends up binding with one among them, George Scruggs, fascinated by the speeches of Dick and his mysterious profession of writer. There still, this wife ultragauchist and these events are reported almost without change in " Radio free albemuth"

Writer

Pushed by his wife, it starts in 1952 a career of writer by profession. Its beginnings are ignored by the world of the SF which with caution looks at this author of which the scientific concepts are rather odd and the literary style nonfree from defects. After very many news written during this period, like Beyond Dregs the Wub , Mr. Spaceship , The Gun , Variable The Man , The Builder , Second Variety , to only quote most known, it decides to launch out in the novel, remunerative.

Its first novel, solar Lottery , very policy, is published in 1955. It takes as a starting point the idea of the mixed strategies in Game theory to suggest the idea that in competing context of the nations it can be advantageous to draw with the fate controlling them at random intervals.

Side family life, the relations are degraded little by little. Dick, which writes especially the night, cannot support any more to see his more active wife only him, and the glance of the neighbors, which see it each morning paresser in the veranda, the met badly at ease. It feels unceasingly tracked, épié, supervised. To succeed in supporting a rate/rhythm of fast work, it takes all kinds of drugs, in particular Amphétamine S, which regularly plunge it in terrible depressions.

Its paranoid side develops with the wire of the months: if it does not succeed, it estimates, it is because it is victim of plots fomented against him. A double effect plays in fact against him:

  • the science fiction is not any more one kind with the mode, the phenomenon of the pulps having passed.
  • the style of Dick arrives too much in advance for the public of the the United States of the time, whose mood is more with the euphoria with suspicion. Its news and novels will meet success in France only after 1968 and in the United States that in the tread of the film Blade runner.

That does not arrange of anything, in the immediate future, the psychological situation nor financial of the novelist.

He divorces his wife in 1958 and meets Anne Williams Rubinstein, from which the husband comes to die. Begin a flirt where Anne and Philip have the impression to include/understand one and the other as if they had never known anybody other. The three little girls of Anne bind very quickly with this large bearded man who unloads at them without shouting station and wife their mother on April 1st 1959. A girl, Laura Archer, are born from this union the February 25th 1960.

The woman of Philip encourages it to write a work which makes of him a famous and recognized author. He then begins the drafting of the Maître of the High Castle .

Once again, the couple turns badly. Anne sees in Dick the image of a writer who it is not and does not make a point of being, this one not being able to decide to give up its kind of predilection, science fiction, although its dream is to be recognized as writer of general literature. His wife opens a jewelry. Philip feels once again maintained by his wife, good with nothing. He suspects Anne of having against him ideas of murder.

He will declare later: “It was a psychotic loophole. It frightened me and by twice it tried to kill me. ”

When Anne leaves the house while taking along her daughter, it sinks in the depression. The divorce takes place in 1964.

In 1962, the Master of the High Castle is published: it is an immense success. A public " dickien" start to be created, filled with enthusiasm by work. The following year, the novel gains the Prix Hugo. In 1963 and 1964, it connects the novels: Clans of the moon alphane , Us them Martians , Shows and God come from the Centaur , this last being one of its most known novels.

In 1964, it remarie with Nancy Hackett, which is 21 years old. It has with it a second child, Isolde Freya (called quite simply Isa). Again, the marriage does not function. Dick shows his wife “to want to make like the others”, and to seek in spite of him to integrate it in what it calls “the Californian good company”. The fashionable life does not interest it: it is devoted entirely to its books, and leaves less and less at his place. The assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King revolt it, and it ceases voting this same year.

During do this period, Dick written the androïdes dream of electric sheep?, which will be used as a basis for the film Blade Runner , but more especially Ubik which will be seen later like the masterpiece of the writer.

In 1970, it is at the end of the roller: it has strong troubles with the tax department and his wife, the world topicality makes it bitter (in particular the Guerre of Vietnam). He writes at that time Coulez my tears, known as the police officer , who carries the print of its depresses moment. Nancy leaves while taking along Isa in September.

This period is darkest of its life. Only, given up by his wife, the author opens his house with all the drug addicts, Hippie S or junkies of passage. More one day does not pass without it Drogue, which causes at his place long periods of is delirious. This experiment pushes it to write Substance dead , written in 1975, published in 1977.

He seeks on several occasions, without success, to be made intern in Psychiatric hospital, however managing to spend a few days in room of examination. Dick is perhaps paranoiac, schizophrenic, but does not present the symptoms characteristic of a hard drug addict: he is well in flesh and form physically.

The November 17th 1971, an event upsets its life. When it returns at his place, it finds “the fractured windows crashed to pieces, doors, the forced locks” and notes “the disappearance of several of businesses: one had made jump cupboard-sorter fire resistant, obviously by means of explosives of the type plastic”, sorter where it preserved all its “treasures”: texts, old pulps of its youth, various collections… At once, its paranoiac fears go back to surface: he shows in turn FBI and the KGB to want to make an attempt on his life.

Then it leaves to settle with Vancouver, which it discovered at the time of a conference of science fiction the February 12th 1972, and where it directly planned to emigrate. He tries to remake his life over there, fall several times in love girls much younger than him, who push back it each time, often taking fear in front of this left man who claims their affection. He tries then Suicide R, by taking a strong amount of tranquillizing.

He survives, and is made intern in X-Kalay, centers Désintoxication for héroïnomanes (although he did not resemble at all, as one saw before, with a drug addict of this type, nor was not really one). It discovers there the hell of the hard drug addicts, whose brain underwent irremediable lesions.

After three weeks with X-Kalay, Dick emigrates with Fullerton. It is lodged by two coeds fans of its works, and meets the writer amateur Tim Powers.

In July, it becomes acquainted with Tessa Busby, young girl reserved, who is then eighteen years old. The couple moves in and they found a hearth together. It then starts again to write.

The Europe, in particular the France, starts to be interested in him. Substance Dead is seen published during this period, as well as the final version of Coulez my tears, known as the police officer , who is nominated in 1974 for Prix Nebula and the Prix Hugo. One proposes to him to adapt do the androïdes dream of electric sheep? film .

Dick had made of its body, like writes it Emmanuel Carrère in its biography, “a shaker with chemical cocktails”. At that time, one spoke much about the flashbacks of acid, where the former drug addicts of the the Sixties had suddenly Hallucination S out of the commun run, and could be taken unexpected fatal impulses, phenomenon which made fear and fascinated average American. Perhaps that explains it the reason which pushed Philip to pour in the mystical , him which had always wanted to prove that our world was false, that there was a higher reality, and that only seemed to him to realize some.

He subscribed with sectarian reviews, lute the publications of the church of scientology, claimed to have several divine revelations, and, invited in 1977 with a conference of SF with Metz in France, made in front of an amazed crowd a very strange speech where he explained why he would have been contacted by Extra-terrestre S in March 1974 and that he maintained with them, since this date, a correspondence.

The Interpretation , enormous work, date of this time. It is about a test where all its revelations are carefully noted, and where Philip K. Dick and Horselover Fat clash, single and even character ( Philippe means in Greek “the friend of the horses” who is written in English “horse to coil”; Dick means large in German, “conceited person” in English). In several of his novels of this last period, the former president Richard Nixon, under his name (in VALIS ) or a fictitious version, appears as a malefic figure of what Dick qualifies d'" Empire" ( the Empire taken forever end is a recurring sentence in VALIS ).

It has a Cerebral vascular accident the February 18th 1982, and dies the March 2nd 1982 of a cardiac failure a few days before the exit of the film Blade Runner drawn from its novel do the androïdes dream of electric sheep? It just started to receive from them the Royalty . He is buried with Fort Morgan, at the sides of his Jane sister, without to have ever known at which point its work was going to become mythical.

In France, the daily newspaper Libération published its obituary the same day as that of another writer, Georges Perec, deceased the March 3rd. The two articles were on the two sides of the same sheet of the newspaper.

It published 36 Romance and five collections of Nouvelle S.

In 1983, one year after its death, a Literary prize is created in its homage and is baptized the Prix Memorial Philip K. Dick.

Work

All the stories of Philip K. Dick have as subjects the modification and the handling of reality. They in the news War game , Souvenir to sell , as in the novels the androïdes are particularly present do dream of electric sheep? , the penultimate truth , the god come from the centaur or Ubik .

Many are those which think that these characteristics come directly from the paranoia which marked its fragile mental health, in particular because of its drug taking (especially of the amphetamines) and of drugs. But social criticism and the cynicism of powerful which " impose a reality fictive" are also very present at his place.

It is very known to have created in its novels a dark atmosphere, thus inspiring the Cyberpunk S although it lived too early to know them. But this “glaucous” atmosphere is due in fact to the intrigue inherited the Gnosticisme which haunts the majority of the novels of Dick: the forgery, which governs this world, and that we perceive like truth, must be uncovered.

During the last years of its life, it devotes the majority of its time to write Interpretation , text monumental on its work of which only one part is published in the United States. It is resulting from the interrogations of Dick on a mystical experiment which he lived in March 1974, which is also at the origin of '' Siva '', emblematic work of the end of his life. One finds fragments of there Interpretation , inside a history which is a true setting in abyme of its own life. With his death one discovers at his place more 8  000 pages of the dialog which it maintains with itself since this experiment. An example among others: by listening to the song of the Beatles Strawberry Fields Forever , he diagnoses that his/her son is reached of a Hernie inguinale, which will be confirmed by later examinations.

There exist two French biographies on Dick:

  • Emmanuel Carrère I am alive and you died , Seuil - Points collection, 1993. Carrère approaches the life of Dick in romantic form.
  • Lawrence Sutin divine Invasions , Folio-SF, 2002. Very complete and detailed.
And a study of the writer Kim Stanley Robinson:

Quotations of Philip K. Dick

  • reality, it is what continues to exist when one ceases believing in it.

  • Our perception is limited because we have only fragmentary outlines of reality. ( At grain-time )

  • Reality is just does not have off view (" Reality is only one way of seeing the choses.")

  • Your reality is not mine. Yours is only one illusion which your perception solidified.

  • We are well in the cave of Plato. The problem, they is that the films that one us master key are rotted.

  • the science fiction is a new dimension of ourselves and an extension of our sphere of very whole reality; she does not know from this point of view any limit.

  • The BASIC tool for the handling off reality is the handling off words. Yew you edge control the meaning off words, you edge control the people who must uses the words. (" The basic tool to handle reality is the handling of the words. If one is able to control the direction of the words, one is able to control people who have with of servir").

Film adaptations

Direct adaptations

After the death of Philip K. Dick, several scenarios were inspired more or less accurately by its works:
  • In 1982 leaves Blade Runner , whose scenario takes as a starting point the novel the androïdes dream of electric sheep? ( C Androids Dream off Electric Sheep? , 1968), whose title became Blade Runner following the success of film.

  • the news Memories to sell ( We Can Remember It for You Wholesale , 1966) was used as a basis for the film Total Recall (1990) of Paul Verhoeven.
  • the novel Confessions of a barjo ( Confessions off has Crap Artist , 1975) was carried to the screen by Jerome Boivin in 1992.
  • the news Nouveau model ( Second Variety , 1953) inspired the film howling Planet ( Screamers ) of Christian Duguay (1995).
  • In 2002, the news minority Report/ratio (1956) and Impostor (1953) are adapted to the cinema, respectively by Steven Spielberg under the title Minority Report and by Gary Fleder under the title Impostor .
  • the film Paycheck of John Woo (2003) is also based on a news of Dick, the Clause of the wages (1953).
  • In 2006, the dead novel Substance ( has Scanner Darkly ), was adapted to the cinema. has Scanner Darkly , carried out by Richard Linklater. The characteristic of film is that all the plans were redrawn to create a particular effect.
  • an adaptation of its news the Man gilded ( The Golden delicious Man , 1954) left in the French rooms on April 25th, 2007, with Nicolas Cage and Julianne Moore. It was carried out by Lee Tamahori and is entitled Next .

Inspirations

  • Among the admirors of Dick, one finds the scenario writer Canadian David Cronenberg. Its “meeting” with the author takes place in 1984: Dino De Laurentiis, which had produced its film Dead Zone , forwards to him a scenario written by daN O' Bannon and Ronald Shusset based on the news of Dick Souvenirs to sell . Dissatisfied with the result, it decides to rewrite it and works above during a year (it writes in all twelve versions different from the history), but runs up constantly against the dissatisfaction with Shusset (also producing of film). It finally decides to leave the project, its vision of the history being too distant from that which Shusset considers. There remains however strongly interested by the work of Dick which he will discover during the following years.

  • In 1999, Cronenberg leaves its film EXistenZ , which he regards as being his “film dickien”, that containing the most topics close to work of Dick. It included besides a kind of homage in film by the means of a paper bag where is registered “Perky' S Pat”, in reference to the novel God come from the Centaur ( The Three Stigmata off Micrometer caliper Eldritch , 1965).
