The Peugeot company enters the industrial era in 1810 under the impulse of the Empereur Napoleon i which needed to dress the soldiers in his Large army: these Meunier S of origin becomes transformers of Coton to Audincourt beside Sochaux in Franche-Comté, then launches out in the Sidérurgie implement of it a Fonderie.
This foundry leaves the place to a manufacture of blades of Scie S. In 1842, the company join four English originating in Lancaster installed in the area of Saint-Etienne, the brothers Jackson, and starting from 1846, produce under company name " Peugeot elder and Jackson brothers " of the band saws, the Tool S, the Busc S and the whales of Umbrella S.
In 1848 after the revolution which caused a Economic crisis, the firm takes the name of " Peugeot Brothers " and manufactures mountings of Acier for the Crinoline S, fashion accessories launched by the empress Eugenie.
The first Automobile S 4 speeds and 8 Chevaux Peugeot Type 2 then Peugeot Type 3 are built only starting from 1890, and roll to 25 km/h. The Moteur with gasoline of this time is built starting from the license of Daimler, given up then to use a Peugeot engine. The company also manufactured, at the origin, the famous pepper mills as well as coffee mills (1876 with 1935), Bicyclette S (independent activity since March 1926), of the electric household appliances, the electric Outillage (filialized in 1981 then yielded in 1996, the Peugeot mark disappeared in this sector). " The Public limit company of the Cars Peugeot " is created in 1896 by Armand Peugeot (centralien).
Established in many industrial sites in France and in the world, the mark is firmly associated with the town of Sochaux, close to Montbeliard in Franche-Comté, in France, where is its larger industrial site which gathers activities of Research and development and of manufacture of Automobile in series. The factory of Sochaux remained, until in the Années 1960, the only final unit of automobile production of the mark, before the construction of the site of Sausheim in Alsace, then in the Années 1970, the acquisition of the industrial tools of Chrysler in Europe.
The “Lion” Symbole of the company is used since 1847 but was deposited as a Logo only in 1858. It symbolized in the beginning three qualities of the blades of Scie S Peugeot: cutting speed, hardness of the teeth and flexibility of the blade . This iron and steel fame of quality will not be déperdira with the passing of years. Besides a publicity of Peugeot in the magazine Scientific American mentioned in the Années 1960 that the motor vehicle oldest in operating condition with the the United States was Peugeot of 1898. It will be necessary to await 1948 and the Peugeot 203 to see disappearing the subjacent Flèche. The Lion Héraldique makes its appearance on the 203. It is rectified on its legs back to adopt the posture familiar of the heraldic lion of the weapons of Franche-Comté, cradle of the company. All the details on the history of the logo are on the international site of the Peugeot mark

Models of Peugeot cars

The first figure is related to the position of the model in the range, the last with its generation. On the plan Marketing, this very simple idea makes save in Peugeot of the million in publicity: when a car names Peugeot 204, one knows from the start which it succeeds the Peugeot 203, and is located in the range more close to the Peugeot 104 that Peugeot 404. There exist nevertheless exceptions, like the 309, former to the 306 and 307. A " is also noted; jump + 2" when series 60 directly passed from the 605 there to the 607. Perhaps in a preoccupation with a marketing: the 605 had hardly shone and it was undoubtedly appropriate but the new signed top-of-the-range truck Peugeot marks some distance with respect to this one… Exit thus 606! Also let us notice that Peugeot seems - at least for the moment - to forsake series 50 there : rather thin series it is true (504 and 505).
Peugeot deposited in the automobile field designations x0y for its models. Thus the Porsche 901 will be marketed under the name of Porsche 911 at the request of Peugeot. On the other hand the Boeing 707 is not concerned on the one hand because it is not a car, and on the other hand because Boeing deposited on its side the names of models of plane in 7x7 (it will be noticed however that Intel was not authorized to deposit numbers 80386,386,486,586 and 686 in spite of its will to do it at the beginning).
The anecdote is often found as what it initially acted to integrate the hole of the Manivelle of starting Moteur into the number of the model. However this easy way was not used on the first models with zero exchange (Peugeot 301, Peugeot 401, Peugeot 601), but only on some models which followed, the Peugeot 302 and Peugeot 402 for example. Much more recently, the zero exchange is used as button of opening of the trunk on the Peugeot 307 DC, Peugeot 407 and Peugeot 607.
The multiplicity of the models decided Peugeot to introduce a double zero on some of its future models instead of the zero single exchange, in order to increase the number of designations available while keeping an air of family in designations of the range. Initially it seems that this double zero serf only with the “special” models which will cohabit with the models having simple a zero (Peugeot 107 and Peugeot 1007 for example).
Also let us note that, according to our information, Peugeot 81 is not a monospace of pre-war period which would have lost its zero.
