Presentation

Petronas, acronym of Petroliam Nasional Berhad, is a Malaysian company created on August 17th, 1974 within the framework of the Law of 1965 on the Companies. At the time the Malaysian Government invests 3 million US dollars for the creation of the company. The company is always held by the Malaysian government, it is in fact a state enterprise. Article 2 of the Law of 1974 on the oil Development confers to him the monopoly of exploration, the development and the production of all the resources oil in Malaysia.

With the passing of years, the company became a multinational having 4 subsidiary companies listed in Bursa Malaysia, and having developed its activities in more than 30 countries. The company employs 33.682 people throughout the world.

It manages a broad spectrum of linked activities to oil and natural gas:
- sector upstream: gas
exploration and extraction - downstream sector: refining, marketing and distribution of oil products, natural gas transformation and liquefaction, production and marketing of petrochemical products, maritime transport and real investments. The public multinational exploits primarily the oil and gas layers of Malaysia, offshore oil rig in the southernmost China Sea. It is also present in many countries, as a partner, or an operator, like Egypt, Iran or Pakistan.

Its seat is located in the tower No 1 of the Petronas twin towers at Kuala Lumpur. The company engaged in automobile sport via Sauber in F1 (it financed the Ferrari engines) and in PWRC with Proton PERT (Petronas racing TEAM) of Karamijt Singh. In 1999, it launches Formulated it One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix on the international circuit of Sepang. The event joins together in 2006 some 107.000 spectators and 600 million televiewers of the whole world.

  • 1974 : Creation of PETRONAS

  • 1975: First oil exportations rough by PETRONAS.
  • 1976: First international cooperations with Esso and Shell.
  • 1978: Creation of PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd, the subsidiary company of exploration and production of PETRONAS.
  • 1981: First oil station PETRONAS located at Taman Tun Dr. Ismail in Kuala Lumpur.
  • 1982: PETRONAS Carigali makes its first discovered oil with Dulang in the state of Terengganu.
  • 1983: Inauguration of first refinery PETRONAS in Kertih, in the state of Terengganu
  • 1985: The first natural gas exports liquefied
  • 1990: First steps towards the globalisation. Maiden E&P cooperates in a project in Burma (current Myanmar)
  • 1992: Launching of the project “Kuala Lumpur City Centers (KLCC)” (Petronas Twin towers) by the chief of the Malaysian government, Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohammad.
  • 1996: Signing of an oil contract with Clouded National Offshore oil rig Oil Corporation and Rafter Overseas Petroleum Ltd in order to manage jointly oil and gas exploration in Bay of Liaodong, in China
  • 1997: Removal of PETRONAS in the most building of the world: the KLCC (Petronas Twin towers)
  • 2003: Foggy PETRONAS Racing TEAM enters the Championship of the World of Motor bike 2003 (2003 World Superbike Championship)
  • 2005:
    • Contract of Service granted by the Filipino Government for the oil and gas exploration of the Block of Mindoro.
    • Discovered oil in the Block of Agadem 1Permit, in Niger.
    • ASEAN Bintulu Fertilizer Sdn Bhd, subsidiary of PETRONAS, signs an agreement with the company Sud-Coréenne Namhee Chemical Corporation to establish a production of melamine in Bintulu, in the state of Sarawak.
    • Launching of the oil range for engines of higher quality in Switzerland and in Liechtenstein
    • PETRONAS and its partners BG International Limited and Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, successfully delivers their first Natural gas cargo liner Liquefied to ASEAN LNG Trading Company Ltd, a subsidiary company of group PETRONAS
    • Cérémonie of commemoration 10 years of implication of Petronas in the world of F1, officiated by the Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi.
    • Beginning of gas production in Rehmat Field in Block 2769-4 (Mubarak) in the Province of Sindh to Pakistan.

Petronas in Formula 1

Sponsor of the stable Sauber as from the season 1995, Petronas took part in the championship of the world of Formula 1 as a technical partner of the Swiss team between 1997 and 2005. The sums of money of Petronas made it possible the private stable to motorize its single-seaters with engines Ferrari - customer. However, and contrary to the stable Prost - Acer, it also customer-Ferrari, Petronas, at least in the first times, was not satisfied with rebadger the Italian blocks but truly developed and optimized in-house the engines. Petronas took the departure of 151 GP of Formula 1 and made it possible Sauber to register a total of 142 points. The best result obtained is one 3rd place taken down with 4 recoveries (Johnny Herbert with the GP of Hungary 1997, Jean Alesi with the GP of Belgium 1998, Nick Heidfeld with the GP of Brazil 2001 and Heinz-Harald Frentzen with the GP of the USA 2003).

Following the repurchase of Sauber by BMW, Petronas found as from 2006 a more conventional role of sponsor on behalf of the new entity BMW Sauber F1 TEAM. Sponsored Petronas also the Grand Prix of Malaysia and that of China.
