Peter Aufschnaiter

Born the November 2nd 1899 with Kitzbühel, deceased the October 12th 1973 with Innsbruck. Mountaineer and Cartographer.

In 1929 and 1931 it takes share with German forwardings for the Kangchenjunga. Then he becomes the director of the German foundation for the the Himalayas in 1936. In 1939, it leads forwarding for the Nanga Parbat in which also Heinrich Harrer takes part. They remain however interned in India because of the Second world war which has just burst in Europe. The April 29th 1944, it manages to escape in company of Harrer and five other prisoners. Aufschnaiter and Harrer arrive to Lhassa the January 15th 1946, it will remain there until in 1950. During this stay, Aufschnaiter imagined a canal system in Lhassa. The arrival of the Chinese army constrained him and his/her companions to take again the escape. Harrer turns over in India, Aufschnaiter remains still approximately ten months in Tibet. In January 1952, it is with the Nepal where it fulfills several missions of cartography. Then starting from 1956, it works with Katmandou as agrarian expert for UNO.

A film (Seven years in Tibet) carried out in 1997 car its contents of this autobiographical book that Heinrich Harrer wrote.
