Personal Computer Memory Card International Association

PCMCIA (for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association ), or PC Card, is an extra-flat format of Expander card, dedicated to the laptops and others peripheral (like the Livebox, Freebox, Neuf Box…).

The standard was developed by an association of manufacturers.

Presentation

Format PCMCIA makes it possible to carry out hot connections ( Hot Plug in English), i.e. one can connect and disconnect the charts without extinguishing and starting again the computer or the peripheral. This Bus data-processing has a length of 32 bits (with the CardBus format, and 16 bits with format PC Card) and is given rhythm with 33  MHz. It can transmit 32×33×10 6 bits a second is 132  Megabits (Mb) a second theoretical output.

There are two kinds, numbered 1 and 2. The second comprises three sub-types differentiated by their thickness:

  • Standard I, thickness 3,3  Misters C' is the finest chart, it is used for the Mémoire flash.

  • Standard II, thickness 5  Misters It is used for the modem and the chart network.
  • Standard III, thickness 10,5  Misters C' is the bulkiest chart, it is used for the hard drive and the combined charts modem/network.

The format " PC Card" , described above any more development does not undergo. It is replaced by a new format the ExpressCard. Whose development is always controlled by association " pcmcia".
