Pedro de Mendoza

Pedro de Mendoza there Luján (Cadiz, 1487? -? , June 23rd 1537), was a Militaire and a Spanish Conquistador , first governor of the Rio of Plata and founder of the town of Buenos Aires.

The 2 or on February 3rd 1536, Mendoza bases, on southern bank of the estuary of the Rio of Plata a port, defended by two strong synopses. It decides to base there a colony and Santa María del Buen Ayre (" calls it; Holy Marie of Good Air" , in French). In liaison with the indigenous populations (querandis), he initially manages to maintain peace and to get vivres.

In December 1536, the natives penetrate defenses of the city, causing a fire and its total destruction. Mendoza and some of its men flee towards north and take refuge at the height of Corpus Christi, in the current province of Santa Fe.

Marked by its failures, Mendoza decides to return in Spain in April 1537. Already very sick, he dies in high-sea during the return voyage, not far from the Canary islands, June 23rd of this same year.
