Peace of Lodi

The peace of Lodi , signed in the Chief town of the province éponyme in Lombardy (Italy), the April 9th 1454, put an end to the confrontation between Venice and Milan which lasted since the beginning of the 15th century (Quattrocento).

The duchy of Venice, after the unfruitful fight against Genoa for the control of the trade with the the East, fight whose culminating point was disastrous the Guerre of Chioggia (1378 - 1381), defers its attention towards the dry land, seeking to impose on each and everyone its any power. Opposed to the expansionist aimings of Venice, the Duchy of Milan, after one period of consecutive uncertainty with died of Jean Galéas Visconti, could find unit and energy under Philippe Marie Visconti.

The decisive confrontation between the two States occurred with Maclodio in 1427: Venice, supported by Florence which hoped for a limitation of the power of its neighbor Visconti, left victorious only thanks to the action the condottiere Francesco di Bussone.

The Venetian victory which gave to the Sérénissime the possession of the territories to the river Adda did not put fine at the opposition between the two duchies which continued until end 1454.

This year, with Lodi, Venice and Milan concluded a final peace, ratified successively by their allies (the first of all was Florence, passed for a long time in the Milanese camp). Septentrional Italy practically found itself shared between the two enemy States (Florence is located a little more at the south) surrounded few States of less importance (the Duché of Savoy, the République of Genoa, the marquisat of Mantoue with the Gonzague, the marquisat of Montferrat with the Paléologue and duchies of Ferrare and Modena of the family of Este). Independent measurements of this peace were the confirmation of the government of François I {{er}} Sforza on the Duché of Milan, the displacement of the border between the two States on the river Adda, indication by indicating beacons all along the border (some crosses carved in the rock remain still) and the beginning of an alliance which will succeed, the August 30th 1454, with adhesion with the Italic Ligue.

The importance of the peace of Lodi lies in the fact that it gave to Italy a new politico-institutional organization which ensured a substantial territorial balance, by limiting the particular ambitions.

The guarantor of this political stability will be Laurent '' Splendid the '' which will implement, in the second part of the 15th century (Quattrocento), its famous political of balance .
