Paul Pellisson

Paul Pellisson-Fontanier , known as Paul Pellisson , is a French man of letters, born with Béziers the October 30th 1624 and died in Paris the February 7th 1693.

Its life and its work

Born in a Protestant family, he studies the right to Toulouse and exerts with Castres. He is presented to the members of the French Academy by his co-religionist Conrart and undertakes to write the first biography of it: History of the French Academy from its establishment in 1652 . After it began the reading of it, this one decides to grant the right to him - single in the history of the Academy - to attend its meetings with all the rights of an academician while waiting for his election to the next vacant seat, which it does on November 17th 1653. Six years later, with the failure of its efforts against the candidature of the older brother of Boileau-Despréaux, Gilles Boileau, which had criticized his/her friends Madeleine de Scudéry and Ménage, it ceases his frequentation to go back there only to dead of Gilles Boileau.

Secretary of Nicolas Fouquet, it is embastillé in 1661 following the disgrace of his Master. There remains imprisoned four years, having refused to disavow Fouquet and having written a Discours with the king, by one of his faithful subjects on the lawsuit of Mr. de Fouquet then the Second defense of Mr. Fouquet in his favor.

Released in 1666, he becomes historiographer of the king. Its abjuration in 1670 obtains ecclesiastical rich person benefit to him.

It appears in the novels of his friend intimates Madeleine de Scudéry under the features of Herminius and Acante . It was also related to the cousin of Madam de Sévigné, Bussy-Rabutin, which said of him which he was “even more honest man than beautiful spirit. ” Voltaire described it like a “poor poet, with the truth, but very erudite and very eloquent man. ”
