Biography

A Breton beginning of career

Paul Le Guen is Breton originating in the Finistere (born in 1964), to which one will give the Potato nickname “of Pencran” in reference to its striking surpuissante and its birthplace, Pencran. From 7 to 13 years, the Paul Le Guen young person plays Landerneau in a club of local patronage, the Guy of Arvor, and evolves/moves in the middle of ground as a n°10. Then in 1977, it signs joined the club of Pencran, its birthplace, which has just been created, it tiny, but is then outclassed of junior. Largely above the batch, Guen integrates the departmental selection, then begins in team 1st from Pencran, at the 17 years age. At 18 years, it joined the 3rd division and the club of the ACE Brest. Thus the young person and powerful Guen (1,86m and 79kg) points out himself by the major club of Finistere, the Brest-native Stade for which it signs in 1983, while continuing its studies in economic scenes in parallel. He thus begins in the 1st division on August 24th, 1984 at the time of a match against Nantes (victory 4-2). He will thus play 33 matches with the Brest-native Stage and will register 3 goals at the time of his first season.

Holder at the station of defensive medium, Paul Le Guen will evolve/move in Brest at the sides of Parisian futures such as Patrick Colleter or Vincent Guerin. The Brest-native Stage tries to become a large club, changes name into becoming Brest Armorique, and recruits large players such as Petrovic or Julio César. But mayonnaise does not take, and the club finistérien plays the bottom of table, and ends up going down at the end of season 1987/88. Faithful to its colors, Guen remains in the 2nd division with Brest, contributes to the increase of the club in the 1st division, and then decides to leave the club after 5 full seasons. It remains in Brittany, and joined the club of Nantes in 1989 coaché by Miroslav Blazevic. There will remain there two years, the time of cotoyer its future fellow-member Antoine Kombouaré.

Seven years of happiness in Paris

The Paris SG, recently repurchased by Canal+ seeks experienced French good players, and it is in all logic that Michel Denisot decides to call upon Guen. Under the orders of the Portuguese Artur Jorge and with an iron defense, the PSG finishes 3rd classification at the time of the season 1991-1992 then 2nd at the time of the season 1992-1993. Paul Le Guen plays 36 matches at the time of her the first two Parisian seasons, and gains the Coupe de France into 1993 vis-a-vis her old club of FC Nantes (3-0).

The dedication arrives in 1994 with its only championship of France as player to which it will contribute largely by registering the trifle of 7 goals in 37 matches. This year 1993-1994 is the last of Artur Jorge which will leave the Parisian bench to yield its place to Luis Fernandez. It at the time of this season is called for the first time in team of France (it will be selected 17 times under the blue shirt) on February 17th, 1993 vis-a-vis Israel. But France, as it is known will unfortunately not qualify oneself for the American World cup in 1994.

The Potato of Pencran continued its harvest of trophies with a Coupe of the League and a Coupe de France in 1995, by signing the goal of the victory vis-a-vis Strasbourg finally (1-0). The following season is even more beautiful with the European victory in Coupe of the Cuts into 1996 vis-a-vis Rapid of Vienna. In championship the PSG of Fernandez will not finish that 2nd in spite of an enormous advance on Auxerre with the trève. It is thus Ricardo, former fellow-member of Guen which takes in hand the orders of the club of the capital. The PSG finally turns over Cut of the Cuts but without success, and is inclined vis-a-vis FC Barcelona of Luís Figo and Ronaldo, and again finishes second of the championship of France.

The season 1997-1998 will be the last of the career of Guen, which it will complete with beautiful doubled Coupe de France - Cut of the League, in spite of modest a 8th place in 1e division. It is time for the former Parisian captain to hang up again the cramps what it does after having carried the Parisian shirt with 345 recoveries for 24 registered goals.

The career of trainer of Guen

Guen does not take a sabbatical year and becomes immediately trainer of the Stade of Rennes. As of its first season, the results are with return with one 5th place at the end of the season, in particular under the impulse of the striker Shabani Nonda. But the Stage of Rennes wants to grow too quickly and obtains only the 13th place at the time of the season 1999-2000. Paul Le Guen, will remain all the same a season more in Brittany and finishes season 00/01 with a very valorous 6th place of the classification.
