Pietro Carafa (born the June 28th 1476 with Sant' Angelo has Scala, in Campanie - died the August 18th 1559) was an Italian monk of the 16th century, which became the 223e pope of the Catholic church.

Biography

Pietro Carafa was initially bishop of Chieti (1504), then archbishop of Brindisi (1518), before becoming Pape the May 23rd 1555 under the name of Paul IV (in Latin Paulus IV , in Italian Paolo IV ). It was one of the founders of the Ordre of Théatins. In 1542, during the pontifical creation of the Crowned congregation of the Roman and universal enquiry , it is named general inspector of the Inquisition. During its pontificate, it practices a nepotism considered to be outrageous even for the time.
