Paul Deacon

Paul (it) Deacon ( Paulus Diaconus in Latin) is a scholar and a monk Benedictine of origin lombarde of the 8th century. It was born towards 720 with Cividale del Friuli, chief town of the duchy lombard of the the Friuli, under the name of Warnefred . Its family belongs to the old nobility lombarde resulting from some Leupegis (or Leupechi in Italian), which lived of the time of the king Alboïn.

Probably formed with Pavia, capital lombarde, under the reign of the king Ratchis, it remains in the royal court under the kings Aistulf and Desiderius (“ Didier ”).

Starting from 782, it takes part in the “Carolingian Renaissance” by remaining five years at the court of Charlemagne. Towards 783, at the request of Angilram, it writes the Gesta episcoporum Mettensium to tell the history of the bishops of Metz and the Carolingian dynasty.

Ves 787 it turns over in Italy where it begins the writing of sound Histoire of Lombards ( Historia Langobardorum ), a history of the people lombard energy of the origins at the year 744 (death of the king Liutprand) and written 787 with 789. Some allot to him the composition of the prayer Ave Husbands Stella.

He dies in the abbey of the Mount-Cassin the April 13rd 800.
