Paul-François Dubois

Paul-François Dubois is a journalist and French politician born with Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine) the June 2nd 1793 and died in Paris the June 12th 1874.

Biography

Paul-François Dubois made his studies with Rennes then entered in 1812 to the National university and was named regent of mathematics to Guérande in 1814. In 1815, it refused to lend oath to the additional Acte with the constitutions of the Empire, was not worried but, being enlisted in the Breton federation which defended Guérande against the royalists, it was relieved with the Second Restoration.

This disgrace lasted little since as of November 1815, it was named regent of Greek language then of rhetoric to the college of Falaise. Professor of second to the college of Limoges (1818), professor of rhetoric to Besancon (October 1819), it taught the French eloquence with the Faculty of Arts and was named in 1820 professor of rhetoric to the Lycée Charlemagne with Paris.

Suspended for failure with the duty of reserve and driven out University in 1823, it collaborated in the universal Tablettes , the European Censeur . In 1824, with Pierre Leroux, Jean Philibert Damiron, Theodore Simon Jouffroy and Alexandre Lachevardière, it founded the Earth , newspaper of liberal inspiration, one of the most opposed to the mode of the Restoration. It was the body of the Doctrinaires before the Révolution of 1830 and of the Saint-Simonians after this one.

The February 15th 1830, it published in the Earth “France and the Bourbons in 1830”, which led it in front of the Court of Assizes. It defended itself with the assistance of Renouard, and was condemned to 4 months of prison and 2.000 francs of fine. It obtained to purge its sorrow in a private hospital and left there to the news the ordinances July. It took one moment the direction of the Globe , which it gave up the August 14th according to in consequence of dissensions between the founders.

In this same year 1830, it had with Holy-Beuve a duel with the gun where famous criticism fought with an umbrella with the hand “agreeing to be killed, he said, but not wet”. They were reconciled later on and Holy-Beuve said of Dubois: “It is a man on the second plans, of a very remarkable talent and a liveliness. ”

The Monarchie of July reinstated it within the frameworks of the university by appointing it general inspector of the studies (October 1830).

The July 5th 1831, Paul-François Dubois was elected appointed by the 1st electoral college of the Loire-Inférieure (Nantes). He was re-elected without interruption until in 1848: the June 21st 1834, the November 4th 1837, the March 2nd 1839, the June 25th 1839, after its nomination like advising titular University, the April 4th 1840, after its nomination as director of the National university, the July 9th 1842, the 1846. It supported the ministerial policy constantly, but always preserved a certain independence: he voted against the allowance Pritchard and for the proposal Rémusat against the deputies civils servant. He was several times secretary of the House of Commons and belonged to a great number of commissions.

The Révolution of 1848 put a term at its parliamentary career. It gave up at the same time the pulpit of French literature which it occupied with the Polytechnic school since 1834. Its liberal opinions made him withdraw, in 1850, the direction of the National university and the dissolution of the former Council of the State education (April 1852) removed its last university functions to him. He lived consequently in the retirement, but however was elected with the Academy of Science morals and political the April 13rd 1870.
