Patagonie

The Patagonie indicates the southernmost area of the South America, extending on the Argentine and the Chile.

Indented by Fjord S abrupt, strewn with stripped small islands, roughcast escarpés tops, like that of the Cerro Paine, Patagonie, in the extreme south of America, it is also the last livable ground before the South pole. One can say that Patagonie is made of ice, fire and blowing wind in storm on steppes where live some men and of the sheep. The summer, by whole pieces, a glacier, scrap of ice-barrier insulated in the grounds, crumbles in the lake Argentino by raising water mountains.

To 600 km in the north of the Cape Horn, border between Chile and Argentina, draws up the Fitz Roy, 3.405 m, top much more difficult of access than those of the the Himalayas. To the foot of this dream of mountaineer, in full center of Patagonie, a forest extends whose trees die of old age or struck by the lightning.

History

Patagonie was discovered in 1519 by Magellan, which named many remarkable places which were on its passage. Patagonie means “Ground of the Large Feet”. The legend says that Magellan and his crew would have seen a tribe of giants to the large feet. They named this tribe the “Patagons” or “Large Feet”. Later, of the explorers claimed to have also seen them and made drawings of Patagons.

the Cortes also says to have seen a tribe of giants of an equivalent size in the the Andes but that remains to be proven.

It is on October 21st, 1520 that the Portuguese navigator Fernand of Magellan discovered the passage which was to make it possible its squadron to achieve the 1st round the world tour. Noticing smoke rising shore, Magellan accepted a volcanic activity. They was undoubtedly hearths lit by the Indians. The place was baptized Ground of Smoke then Ground of Fire.

In 1860, Orélie-Antoine de Tounens, acknowledged originating in Périgueux, unloads in Araucanie (in the center of current Chile), where it is quickly carried triumphs over it by the Indians, who see in him the saver who will release them from the Chilean exactions . The November 20th 1860, it is proclaimed king d' Araucanie and of Patagonie: two years later, it is expelled and repatriated in France. Over there, it continues its combat while launching a subscription which meets only the mockeries of the press. Nevertheless having tried on several occasions to regain its kingdom, it will be expelled each time by the Chilean authorities or Argentinas and will die in Tourtoirac, in the Dordogne, 1878.

In 1881, Patagonie will be officially divided between Argentina and Chile, but the borders between the two countries will be definitively fixed only in 1902, following an arbitration returned by the king of England, Edouard VII.

Holy Wolf and Jean Raspail wrote much on this mythical kingdom, of which some are still regarded as the subjects, a little everywhere in the world.

Cities

the port of Ushuaia , with the foot of the Andes of the South, vis-a-vis the Earth of Fire, formerly lives to pass the sailing ships of the whole world, charged with corn or ore coming from California or Valparaiso, on the way for the other side of the world. After the boring of the channel of Panama, it was the return to the winter torpor, under a sky charged with clouds. The Indians became Docker S of a small local traffic and a species of Manchot S.A. borrowed its name (Spheniscus magellicanus) from Magellan.

Geopolitics

Cone southern, as the works of Géostratégie say, which indicates the southernmost part of South America, is on both sides occupied of the Andes cordillera by Patagonie. This one was divided between Argentina and Chile in 1881. The Patagonie Argentina (787.291 km ²) is formed by the provinces of Neuquén, Rio Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz and Ground of Fire. Chilean side, it is formed of north in the south by the areas of Araucania, Los Lagos, Aisén and of Magallanes there Antartica Chilena. There are thus two Patagonies with the political plan but also in the climatic plan. Because the barrier of the Andes determines two types of climate: wet and fresh on the narrow peaceful slope (Chilean side), dryness and windy on the Atlantic slope (Argentinian side). Of the two countries, it is undoubtedly Argentina which grants to Patagonie an main interest. Indeed, with hardly a million and half of inhabitants (and more human weak density of the country), Patagonie provides to Argentina 75% of its oil production. In addition, this oil production was often the stake of conflicts of border between the two States.
