The pastoral are sung plays, assembled by the inhabitants of the same village on a religious or historical topic (one of the recurrent themes is that of Santxo Andia , or Sanche Large the, king of Navarre of 1005 with 1035).

History

Primarily played in Drunk, the pastoral ones represent one of the oldest forms of culture of the Basque Country. They draw their origins in the Moyen-âge, carried by the oral tradition, the first writings dating from the 18th century.

They in the beginning were played in the churches, but judged obscenes, they had to find other scenes.

Since the years 1950, thanks to the poet Pierre Bordaçarre ( Etxahun-Iruri ), the pastoral one was renovated, less in its form that in the topics which it explores, which concentrates on the history of the Basque Country.

In the beginning, the pastoral one was announced the morning, at the time of the religious service. It started with a procession called will munstra , to the scene where one of the participants took care of the initial pheredika , which consists of a safety with the assistance and a presentation of the topic of the pastoral one.

The pastoral itself one started then. The scenes were numbered, so that the public can follow the course of the action, a child located close to the musicians being charged to hold up panels on which the numbers were registered.

The pastoral one was completed by a pheredika final, consistent in a summary of the message carried by the spectacle and in a final safety.

Unfolding

The pastoral ones can last up to three hours and present dance S and song S in Basque. They accompany all the local festivals, throughout the year.

; Characteristics

  • Dualism: it is perhaps what constitutes its most important characteristic. A clear distinction between the goods and the malicious ones is established. Among the good one finds the Christians (Kiristiak), the angels, the priests and God, although this last is never physically represented, but only interpreted by one vote. On the other hand, the malicious are always the enemies of the time, the Turks (Buckwheats) and Turquettes, the French, the English and the " Satan" , which punctuates the representation of step of dance souletine.
  • music: in the beginning, the accompaniment was done using Gregorian chants, during which the characters entered, left or changed. The principal instruments were the flute and the atabal but nowadays, the instrumental presence notably widened: it from now on consists of coppers, violins, and traditional the ttun-ttun, txulule and atabala.
  • dance: it constitutes the principal expressive object of work.

; Nowadays Nowadays, pastoral major is held each year in a different village; it happens sometimes that two villages play pastoral same year; that remains exceptional.
