Passau

Passau is a town of Bavaria in Germany, located at the Austrian border , with the confluence of a river, the the Danube ( Donau ), and of two rivers: the In and the Ilz.

The city extends on 69 km ² and counts 50  371 inhabitants.

History

The town of Passau was deeply marked by two millenia of history. This results in an impressive richness of historical curiosities that the city offers to its visitors. The oldest discoveries date from 80 after J.C and the Roman epoch: The Boiotro Manor house.

A colony Celtique existed already before on the hill of the city. From 739, Passau was the episcopal see, and two monasteries were built there, of which Kloster Niedernburg, which was one present of Frederic Ier Barberousse with the bishop in 1161. The religious peace of Passau was signed in 1552 by allowing the secularization of the ecclesiastical goods. As from 1803, Passau belonged to the electorate of Bavaria.

Activities

While walking along the the Danube and of the In, it is possible to see an exceptional natural phenomenon: the confluence of a river (the the Danube) and of two rivers (the In and the Ilz). It is even possible to differentiate the three rivers at the place where they meet thanks to their different colors. In 1952, the European Weeks were created. This festival presenting of the cultural contributions of all Europe, in the field of the music, the literature, the theater, film and various exposures, was received in 1999 with the European Association of the Festivals.

Culture

Passau is a town of museums of a great diversity: The Museum diocesan sheltering the treasure of the cathedral, the Museum of glass, the Museum of the toys, the Museum “Boiotro Manor house”, the Museum of the history of psychology as well as the Museum of modern art. In the cathedral St Stephan, one can listen to concerts of organ played on the largest organ of the world. During tens of years, this cathedral of style Baroque Italy N dominated the cultural territory of the Danube.

In 1961, Passau accommodates the 1st Festival Europa Cantat.

Curiosities

  • the citadel “Jacket Oberhaus”, old castle-extremely of the princes bishops of Passau, is an imposing building going back to 1219 which offers a splendid panorama on the city. Its architecture is marked by three great artistic times: Gothic, Rebirth, Baroque.
  • the Cathédrale St Stephan has the largest organ of the world and shelters the Museum diocesan with the treasure of the cathedral.

Teaching and research

The university of Passau, founded in 1978, is the most recent university of Bavaria. The campus located in the downtown area accommodates nearly 8000 students divided in five principal faculties of teaching: catholic theology, right, economic scenes, data processing and mathematics, philosophy. The university also has an research activity in these fields, ensured by its permanent teacher-researchers or doctorands.
