Party for national safeguarding
The Parti for national safeguarding (Þjóðvarnarflokkurinn) is a Political party in Iceland.
It was founded on March 15th 1953, by the same group of people which published the weekly magazine Frjáls Þjóð. The party was opposed to the accession of Iceland to NATO and asked for the organization of a referendum. It was also against the presence of American military bases in Iceland. He preached an economy where would cohabit sectors private and public.
In 1953, it obtained two seats at the national parliament at the time of the legislative elections. It lost them however at the time of the following elections. The party was also represented with the Council of the students of the Icelandic University, at the town council of Reykjavik and in the local government of Akureyri.
In 1963, the party for national safeguarding introduced candidates on the list of the Alliance of the people. It then gained again a seat, which it preserved until in 1979.
