Papineau is a regional Municipalité of county of the province of Quebec located in the administrative Région of the Outaouais, Canada. It is made up of 24 local municipalities, including 21 municipalities, 2 cantons and 1 city.

Its chief town is Papineauville and its prefect in 2005 is Paulette Lalande. It is named in the honor of Louis-Joseph Papineau.

History

  • the MRC of Papineau consisted of January 1st 1983. Its territory takes again the central part of the Comté of Papineau.

Demography

In 2001 the population of Papineau was of 20.367 inhabitants. Of this number 29% inhabitant in urban environment is in the villages of Thurso, Papineauville and Saint-Andre-Avellin. The population of Papineau is to 93% French-speaking person and 5% english-speaking. Papineau is also in catholic majority with 89% of the population, the remainder divides between the Protestants (7%) and the atheists (4%).
