Papaw tree

The papaw tree ( Carica papaya L.) is a Fruit tree with persistent foliage of the wet and under-wet tropical areas, of the family of the Caricacées, cultivated for its Fruit, the Papaye. It is originating in the Southern of Mexico. It is a dioïque plant. The papaw tree can be male or female, but also hermaphrodite. The females and the hermaphrodites (in less quantity for the latter) bear fruits; they however require a pollination to bear fruits.

Flowers

The papaw tree is usually a dioïque tree, the feet are male or female, but there exist hermaphrodites types (bisexués). The male flowers appear on long panicles ramified with the armpit of the sheets, while the female flowers are born isolated or by group of 2 or 3 on the upper part of the trunk. From the genetic point of view, it was established that: 1) When the female flowers are fertilized by male flowers, their descent consists of 50% from male feet and 50% of feet females. 2) When flowers hermaphrodites are autofécondées, their descent is of 66% from bisexués feet and 33% of feet females 3) When female flowers are fertilized by pollen of bisexuées flowers, their descent is of 50% of bisexués feet and 50% of feet females

All the plant contains a proteolytic Enzyme, the Papaïne.

Commercial varieties

  • Sunrise Solo : originating in Hawaii, early, fruits rounded or pyriforme, of a weight from 400 to 600 G, pulps orange red excellent for a consumption in will natura . Output: 37 t/ha/an.
  • Formosa : hybrid of Chinese origin, fruits weighing of 800 G to 2,5 kg, pulps drawing towards the yellow or the red. Output: 70 t/ha/an.
  • Tainung nº 1 : highly productive hybrid (papaw tree of the Costa-Rica X Sunrise Solo), round or lengthened fruits, orange red pulp, excellent savor. Output: 60 t/ha/an.
