Panchen LAMA

The line of the Panchen Lamas is a line of important Réincarnation in the history of the Tibet. Panchen LAMA is indeed the second higher spiritual leader of the Bouddhisme Tibetan Guélougpa (school known as of the yellow Bonnets). It is located just after the Dalaï Lama in this hierarchical system. The origin of the word Panchen is the combination of two words: Pandita , which means “scholar” in Sanskrit and Chen-Po , which means " grand" in Tibetan. Panchen thus results in “large scholar”. LAMA means “main spiritual”. Panchen LAMA is regarded as an emanation of the Bouddha Amitabha (“of infinite light”).

Towards the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century, Tsongkhapa Losang Drakpa founded a Buddhist tradition called Guélougpa. About 1445, a student and nephew of Tsongkhapa, Gendun Drup (1391-1475), built a large monastery, the Tashilhunpo, in the west of Lhassa, Shigatsé. Gendun Drup was retroactively called the 1st Dalaï Lama when the 3rd incarnation in its line, Sonam Gyatso (1543-1588), received the title of Dalaï of its chief and Mongolian disciple Altan Khan in 1578. Gendun Drup also received the title of Panchen of a contemporary Tibetan scholar, Bodong Choklay Namgyel, after he had answered successfully all the questions of the wise one. The successive abbots of the monastery of Tashilhunpo all were called “Panchen”. Then, to the 17th century, the 5 {{E}} Dalaï Lama (1617 - 1682), gave the monastery of Tashilhunpo to its professor, Lobsang Chökyi Gyalsten, 15th abbot of the monastery. As an abbot of the monastery, it was called Panchen, but it received the distinctive title of “Panchen LAMA” when the 5 {{E}} Dalaï Lama announced with dead of its professor that this one reappears and that the child would succeed to him. The title of “Panchen LAMA” was also applied retroactively to the 2 preceding incarnations of its professor although they did not belong to the monastery of Tashilhunpo, and the new incarnation became thus 4th Panchen LAMA.
