The Palatine Hill ( Mons Palatinus in Latin, Assembles Palatino in Italian) is one of the Seven hills of Rome. Irregular quadrilateral of approximately 2 kilometers of circumference and a alitude of 70 meters, the Palatine one occupied a central position in old Rome. It gives on the Forum Romanum to north and on the Circus Maximus to the south.

Under the Empire, the Palatine one was occupied by imposing residences built for the emperors, which gave rise to the word " palais". Their ruins occupy today most of the hill.

The Palatine one and the foundation of Rome

According to the legend, Rome finds its origin on the Palatine Hill. According to the Roman Mythology, it is on the Palatine Hill, in the cave of the Lupercale (of which the discovery was announced in November 2007), that Romulus and Remus was discovered by the she-wolf which nourishes them. The shepherd Faustulus found the two children then and, with his wife, Acca Larentia, raised them. Later, it is on the Palatine Hill that Romulus decided to found the city. It is about the one of the oldest parts of the city.

Recent excavations showed that a population lived at this place with approximately of the year 1.000 front J. - C.

The emperors of Rome built their palates on the Palatine Hill. The ruins of the palates of Auguste, Tibère and Dioclétien can still be visited.
