Its inhabitants is called Paimpolais (be).

Geography

Geology

The area of Paimpol shows that the Brittany was formerly a ground of Volcan S. With the point of Guilben of the dark rocks advance in the sea. In fact here Pillow washed S (lava in cushions) testify to a volcanicity very old submarine (640 million years). Spilites which constitute the mass of the pillows contain blocks of red Cornaline. A little in North, the hillock of Kerroc' H offers a unspoilable view on bay. The tower which surmounts it was built partly in purplished red Rhyolite: a Lava recovered a little low on the shore. Below the tower, indeed, one finds the traces of another volcanicity paimpolais (from 550 to 530 million years that one). Here the rock contains fiammes formed following a volcanic Cloud. Other side of Paimpol, in the south, worms Holy-Bores are the volcanites Plouézec (approximately 470 million years).

History

  • In 1202 the count Alain de Goëlo founds the Abbaye of Beauport

  • Nom of Paimpol into Breton: according to Herve Abalain (2000) “ Penpol in 1184, Penpul in 1198; Paimpol is the francized form of PEN poull : the end of stretch of water”. But Pempoull was however retained. The history of Paimpol is however quite related to a pond, whose Paimpol was one of the two ends, on the side of Kérity, the other being located at Plounez.

  • 1824: the commune of Lanvignec is attached to Paimpol
